Nels J

The 2nd addition to Heritage Marine, NELS J, (former ARES) was built in 1957 in Port Arthur Texas. After many years in the Gulf of Mexico she had sustained more than a few dents and needed replacement or updating of many of her systems. She was placed in dry-dock before her delivery and was inspected and iceplated with 1.5 inches of steel plating in her how for the extremes of ice that the Duluth harbor experiences. Also added a that time was an 18 inch bowthruster tube which will be fully operational in the spring of 2011. Her hull was inspected, repainted, and her anodes replaced. Her stack was modified and many of her upper works removed for her transit up the Mississippi and river systems into Chicago Illinois. The NELS J has a single 15-645-E2 EMD locomotive engine which makes 1900HP at 800RPM and can deliver up to 2200HP when operated at her upper rpm limits. She is a single screw with a 110 inch stainless propeller and has a large Falk gearbox. The NELS J is the largest, newest, and most powerful commercial tug based in the Duluth harbor.
